Expert comment on Barak building –

In an architectural innovation, a 32-storey apartment block at the north end of

Melbourne’s CBD will feature the image of Aboriginal leader William Barak across

its sculpted façade.

Barak’s face will be sculpted through the light and shade of the building’s white

concrete balconies, in a novel technique that developers claim to be a world first.

How have architectural landmarks in Australia and overseas invested social

meaning into their design?

Dr Marcus White is a lecturer in architecture and urban design in RMIT University’s

School of Architecture and Design.

His research has looked at public landmarks and their impact on the urban

landscape.
