Airservices Brightens Lives for Young People with Cancer

MEDIA RELEASE

6 May 2009

Airservices has donated more than $30,000 to CanTeen to brighten the lives of young Australians living
with cancer.

Aviation rescue and fire fighting (ARFF) employees from Perth, Broome, Canberra and Sydney collected almost $17,000 in support of the charity's 2008 major fundraising event, National Bandanna Day. Airservices matched this amount dollar-for-dollar, doubling the total.

The funds were formally handed to CanTeen state groups last month.

Perth and Sydney airport-based fire fighters drew attention to the 2008 fundraising event by driving ultra-large fire trucks into each city's CBD to maximise sales.

Airservices has been supporting CanTeen since 1997.

It is one of three national charities selected by Airservices staff for active fundraising and support, with the organisation matching all funds raised by staff dollar-for-dollar.

The other nominated charities are the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Angel Flight Australia.

Airservices spokesman Rob Walker said staff from all areas of the organisation were actively involved in charity fundraising efforts.

"Our fire fighters, air traffic controllers, technical and corporate staff all have generously donated time to support these causes and their local communities," Mr Walker said.

"In particular, our fire fighters donate significant amounts of their own time to support CanTeen.

Airservices is pleased to be able to add its support to the great work done by our staff on an ongoing basis," Mr Walker said.
