RUNWAY SAFETY MAINTENANCE AT SYDNEY AIRPORT
The Department of Infrastructure and Transport has approved a request from
Sydney Airport Corporation Limited to temporarily close the southern end of the
main runway (16R/34L) at Sydney (Kingsford Smith) Airport for essential safety
works.
The works will occur at night, between 11pm and 5am in order to minimise
disruptions.
During the essential safety works, aircraft will continue to land and take off over
water.
There will be no changes to flight paths for approach and departure.
Aircraft movements on the main runway will continue to operate at its northern end,
with the difference being that they will occur north of the east-west runway.
This project involves a major runway reseal, which is necessary every 10-15 years
to ensure safety at major airports such as Sydney.
The runway safety maintenance project involves:
runway and taxiway asphalt overlay (re-sheeting);
linemarking;
airfield ground lighting works;
asphalt surface patching; and
blast shoulder repairs.
The essential safety maintenance approved by the Department on the main runway
is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Sydney Airport Corporation has placed notices in local newspapers as well as
establishing a phone hotline and a website.
They have also provided information to the Sydney Airport Community Forum and
notified Federal and State members and local councils.
Further information on the project is available from Sydney Airport Corporation
