Safe Skies Ahead With Airservices Upgrades and Inspections

Airservices Flight Inspection Service (FIS) will visit urban and regional parts of Australia this month checking navigation aids, while work will continue on the upgrade of non-directional beacons nationally.

The functional accuracy checks of critical air navigation equipment ensure passenger safety at regional and major airports, aerodromes and airstrips.

The inspection service will carry out 71 individual routine or special flight inspections on equipment at:

NSW Sydney, Tamworth, Lismore, Walgett, Ballina, Coffs Harbour, Williamtown, Calga, Bankstown, Nowra, Williamsdale, Wollongong
ACT Canberra, Church Creek
QLD Amberley, Cunnamulla, Thargomindah, Winton
VIC Essendon, Nhill, Hamilton, Warrnambool, Avalon
SA Adelaide, Bordertown, Mt Gambier, Modbury, Edinburgh
NT Darwin, Tindal, Howard Springs.

Navigational aids to be tested include instrument landing systems (ILS), distance measuring equipment (DME) and non-directional beacons (NDB).

Positional and navigational information is relayed from these aids to aircraft to support pilots with air navigation and airport arrivals.

The inspections will be performed by specialist aircrew using a twin-engine Beechcraft King Air aircraft and precision equipment to collect data.

This data is then analysed by Airservices maintenance and engineering specialists to ensure each navigation aid is operating accurately.

Airservices technicians will also be on the ground in Inverell and Tennant Creek to upgrade NDB equipment. They will then move to sites in Bathhurst and Meekatharra later in the month.
