Woman to face court over heroin import at Perth Airport

A 22-year-old Malaysian woman will face Perth Magistrates Court today
charged with importing more than two kilograms of heroin, concealed in a
suitcase.

The woman arrived in Perth on board a flight from Hong Kong on Thursday
3 July 2008.

Customs officers conducted a search of the woman's luggage and an x-ray
revealed a possible narcotic concealment.

Officers drilled into the suitcase and found approximately 2.4 kilograms of a
white powder that initial tests indicated to be heroin.

The woman was referred to Australian Federal Police for questioning.

She will face court this morning charged with importing a commercial quantity of
a border-controlled drug (heroin) contrary to section 307.1 of the Criminal Code
Act (1995).

Forensic testing of the substance will confirm the commodity and determine the
exact weight and purity of the drug.

The maximum penalty for this offence is life imprisonment and/or an $825,000
fine.
