Abigroup appointed to build Queensland Childrens Hospital
Abigroup has been appointed by the Queensland Government to be the managing
contractor for the $1.2 billion Queensland Childrens Hospital in Brisbane.
The project, which is due to open in 2014, involves the construction of a 12 storey
hospital, with an additional four levels of underground parking, located next to the
existing Mater Childrens Hospital in South Brisbane.
Abigroup has been doing preliminary work on the project since September 2007,
initially providing a building consultancy service on the planning of the project - and
then from October 2008 carrying out enabling works comprising road re-grading,
services relocation and demolition work.
Abigroups Managing Director David Jurd said, Abigroup is delighted to be
appointed managing contractor for this prestigious project which will provide
Queensland with one of the worlds leading childrens hospitals.
Award of this contract recognises the good work done by our Queensland building
team over the past two years. We look forward to providing a first class facility
which the whole of Queensland and Australia can be proud of.
The hospital has a striking design and will incorporate the use of colour and space as
well as a creative art program to create a patient and family friendly environment
and enhance clinical outcomes.
It is being designed by architects Conrad Gargett and Lyons in a joint venture.
The new hospital will have 359 beds and will offer new obesity, pain and allergy
services as well as a new renal treatment centre.
Construction work on the new hospital is forecast to have a workforce of around
1500 at its peak.
