Abigroup wins National Infrastructure Award for Contractor
Excellence
For the second year running, Abigroup has scooped the National
Infrastructure Award for Contractor Excellence. Abigroup alongside
Alliance partners McConnell Dowell, KBR and LinkWater won the award on
19 March for the Southern Regional Water Pipeline Alliance (SRWPA)
project. The project will deliver $1.2 billion of water infrastructure to
South-East Queensland.
The National Infrastructure Awards celebrate and acknowledge innovation
and excellence through expertise and leadership in Australian
infrastructure. Host of the awards, industry body National Infrastructure
Australia, recognised the innovative and efficient way that the SRWP
project team handled diverse onsite issues, ensuring their success in the
Contractor Excellence category.
Abigroup Executive Director of Operations David Jurd feels that the win
reinforces the benefit in using an alliance model to establish the best
possible team and outcome for a project. “We will be able to deliver this
project earlier than planned as the SRWP Alliance has worked as an
integrated team from the outset and utilised a collaborative approach
across the board”.
Starting from Brisbane to Gold Coast, the SRWP infrastructure project will
connect these future water sources to where it is most needed. It is
anticipated that the Alliance will deliver the project in less than 30 months
through the use of a quick-start approach and the early mobilisation of
staff, a matrix organisational structure and the provision of effective and
continual risk management assessments. The early procurement of key
items and efforts to minimise on-site works has also worked to fast track
project timeframes. Environment impact statements have been processed
in eight months, ahead of the standard two years and this is despite the
project undertaking 970 local and statutory approvals.
With final completion expected to be in October 2008, the Southern
Regional Water Pipeline is a regional infrastructure project of key
importance and will assist Brisbane City, Ipswich City, Logan City, Gold
Coast City and Beaudesert Shire Council with their existing and long term
potable water requirements. The SRWPA has recently also won the
Queensland Major Contractors Safety Excellence Award. In 2007,
Abigroup won the Contractor Excellence Award for the Westlink M7 Joint
Venture.
