Death on Coburg Construction site result of unsafe work practices says CFMEU
Todays tragic death of construction worker Thomas Kelly, killed after a concrete pump came loose and
struck him in the chest and head, is the result of unsafe work practices and a failure by the building
companies involved to ensure a safe work site.
Victorian Secretary of the Construction Division of the CFMEU, Bill Oliver, said This death all deaths
on construction sites are a tragedy. We believe this tragedy was preventable and that both the
company involved and WorkSafe should be held accountable.
The CFMEUs role is to ensure all construction workers are safe. We want to see every construction
worker come to work and go home safely at the end of the day. As experts in occupational health and
safety issues and as the only watchdog with any teeth in this industry we feel it is important to ensure this
sort of accident doesnt happen again.
We will be working with the company and the workers to make sure they comply with all health and
safety laws and regulations in the future, he said.
The CFMEU is here to protect the safety and workplace rights of all construction workers. We send our
condolences and very best wishes to Mr Kellys family, friends and co-workers.
