DEFENCE HOUSING WELL AHEAD IN DELIVERING
NATION BUILDING HOUSES
Greg Combet, Minister for Defence Personnel, Materiel and Science, today
announced that Defence Housing Australia (DHA) has completed the 200th
construction of the expected 802 Defence houses funded by the Nation
Building-Economic Stimulus Plan.
The 200th Defence house has been completed this week in Adelaide. It was
one of six houses constructed in the northern suburb of Andrews Farm, said
Mr Combet.
In addition, contractors have now been engaged to construct all 829 houses
under the nation building stimulus. This is 27 more houses than previously
anticipated, which is a fantastic achievement.
This is great news for the communities where the additional construction
activity has further stimulated the local economy. It is also great news for the
Australian Defence Force (ADF) members and their families who will be soon
moving into these new homes, Mr Combet said.
Of the 829 houses to be constructed, 600 houses have commenced major site
works.
Defence houses have also already been completed in Brisbane, Darwin,
Hunter, Ipswich, Melbourne, Wodonga and Townsville.
The Governments stimulus plan has delivered jobs and supported the
residential construction industry and is delivering long term benefits to local
communities, Mr Combet said.
The primary function of DHA is to supply housing and related services to ADF
members and their families in line with Defence operational requirements.
DHA currently manages 17,300 properties across Australia worth about $7.8
billion.
