Iconic University of Sydney Central building opens
Last night, Abigroup Contractors held a function to celebrate the
successful completion of the new Sydney University Central Project. The
function was held in the retail area which is part of the new Jane Foss
Russell Building in Darlington.
Guests included University of Sydney staff, Project Managers Capital
Insight, subcontractors, Abigroup project staff and senior managers Peter
Brecht, David Walker and David Jurd.
The evening was a chance for those involved in the project to celebrate
with the client and other stakeholders, for the iconic building constructed
by Abigroup and designed by John Wardle Architects is a landmark
structure that uses innovative design to signpost the buildings green
credentials.
The environment was considered in the buildings design. The low energy
consumption of the completed building is to Green Star guidelines and
includes the use of low energy mechanical services. Chilled beams were
also used to provide a passive air conditioning system and solar panels
were installed on the roof.
The new eight level building will house a new science and technology
library with retail and student administration areas comprising the rest.
The library has been designed with a split level workspace running down
to a glass façade that looks over the new Maze Green public domain area.
The new footbridge will draw people from the wide lobby area within the
building across the road. A key component of the works by Abigroup was
to build a stronger link between the two parts by constructing the new
building and footbridge and invigorating the surrounding public space of
Maze Green.
Abigroups ability to deliver a high standard of construction on significant
building projects has been demonstrated by the University of Sydney
Central building.
