NOTE TO EDITORS
Spiros Dassakis, CEO, Swimming Pool and Spa Association (SPASA) NSW is available for
comment today regarding the NSW Child Death Review Team Annual Report findings that
seven children drowned in backyard pools in NSW last year, despite an overhaul of the
Swimming Pools Act.
Spiros is available on 0404 818 666 to discuss the following points:
Councils are still ill equipped to deal with pool fence inspections. SPASA has made itself
available to work with the Department of Local Government through its vast retail
network to assist in the inspection of fences as a possible solution.
The laws have changed many times for stronger fencing regulations and although
adequate fencing is important, education is the key to drowning prevention. SPASA is
calling for an ongoing swimming education program to be included in schools syllabus,
subsidised CPR, and swimming lessons for children.
