LEITCHVILLE CHEESE FACTORY CLOSES
The National Union of Workers today called on Murray Goulburn to find jobs for up to 80
workers affected by the Leitchville cheese factory closure in northern Victoria.
NUW Victorian Secretary Antony Thow said the closure was a double blow for workers.
Last year many workers used large amounts of their entitlements to help the company
get through the global financial crisis, Mr Thow said.
They now face redundancy with reduced levels of entitlements.
The factory closure will have a major impact on the workers, their families and the local
community, he said.
Mr Thow said job opportunities at other Murray Goulburn sites should be found quickly.
The company has indicated they are willing to pay relocation costs for workers willing to
move to another site.
We call on the company to find company jobs for as many as possible.
Mr Thow said many of the members would find it difficult to find full-time employment in
the region.
Workers may have to relocate or accept casual positions if they lose their full time job,
he said.
Well work with the company to help members find alternative employment within
Murray Goulburn.
We will also assist members to find and access new training opportunities to help get
another job.
Mr Thow said the company attributed the factory closure to the severe drought and a
40% reduction in milk production in the region.
