Intellipack launches global standard ‘compostable’ film

Considered one of the first fully ‘compostable’ packaging films – Intellipack’s AIR-Plus®

Bio-Film is setting the industry standard in environmental films.

SYDNEY, Australia – 1st

October 2009 – In a strategic move away from traditional

polyethylene (PE) films, Intellipack – in conjunction with German manufacturer Storopack –

have created an environmentally sustainable film that is not only 100 per cent  renewable, but

enjoys the strength and composition properties of PE-based films.

With source reduction, sustainability and renewable materials now being mandated by

governments, the packaging industry and end users across the globe – the proliferation of ‘green’

packaging products is not surprising. The key issue, however, is that many of these packaging

products make claims that cannot be supported.

Peter Blakeley, Managing Director of Intellipack, believes AIR-Plus®

Bio-Film can support its

environmental claims having already met stringent US, European and Japanese standards.

“There are many PE based film manufacturers and suppliers that claim their films are degradable

and even compostable,” said Peter. “The reality is that many of these films are not made from

renewable materials and contain heavy metals that cause the PE to ‘fragmentise’ under the

influence of oxygen and ultra-violet light.”

In a growing and increasingly competitive ‘green’ market, companies must now meet demanding

global standards if they are to claim a true environmental packaging solution.

AIR-Plus® Bio-Film has already met global standards including: DIN Certco EN 134432; ASTM

D6400 and GreenPla,” added Peter. “This has positioned AIR-Plus® Bio-Film as the industry

standard in ‘green’ air bag film.”

The base material for the film is corn. In addition to its clear environmental benefits, corn also

consumes CO2 while growing another critical environmental process. From a performance

perspective, nothing is lost due to the bio-nature of the film.

“AIR-Plus® Bio-Film has properties which match the best PE-based films,” continued Peter. “3-

way co-extrusion manufacturing makes the film thinner while maintaining its ability to hold air in

bag form and still allowing for excellent elasticity compared to mono-extruded bio films.”

“The launch of this film confirms our market position as a leader in environmental packaging

technology,” concluded Peter.
