WiMAX Expo Opens in Taipei with M-Taiwan Leading the Way

TAIPEI, June 2 /Xinhua-PRNewswire-AsiaNet/ --

The World's Largest Venue for Experiencing and Testing WiMAX is Ready!

M-Taiwan has been underway for 3 1/2 years and the government's work, from issuing and

deploying spectrum to assisting manufacturers to develop WiMAX equipment, is done. The

achievements will be showcased on 2-6 June at the Taipei Show Hall Two in the world-class

dedicated exhibition entitled 2008 WiMAX Expo, Taipei. M-Taiwan's application services and Open

Solution Integration demonstrate how Taiwan-produced WiMAX products successfully mesh with

commercial network equipment from abroad, serving as testimony that the technical standards of

locally-made WiMAX are on par with those of major manufacturers around the world. The timing is

right for Taiwan to penetrate the international WiMAX market.

Advisors for the expo include the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Science and Technology

Advisory Group of the Executive Yuan and the Taipei City Government. WiMAX Expo, Taipei is

organized by the Taipei Computer Association and the Taiwan External Trade Development

Council and is co-organized by the WiMAX Forum, Industrial Technology Research Institute and the

Institute for Information Industry.

60 exhibitors in 250 booths will exhibit a variety of related equipment and application systems. It

is a large WiMAX exhibition in global scale. This year's 2008 WiMAX Expo is divided into four

areas, the WiMAX Applications Area, the WiMAX Components, the WiMAX System Products Area,

and the WiMAX Testing Area. A M-Taiwan Pavilion will also be located on the premises. According

to analysis by the Market Intelligence Center of the Institute for Information Industry, the total

accumulative investment of global WiMAX deployment is expected to reach US$4.8 billion from

2007 to 2008. Presently, about 260 telecommunication operators around the world are deploying

WiMAX networks and testing WiMAX technologies. At this significant moment, WiMAX Expo, Taipei

will exhibit leading new telecommunication trends.

Taiwan's famed notebook manufacturers ACER, ASUS, and Quanta, will take front stage at this

show and will display their latest laptops with embedded WiMAX chipsets. The combination of

portable terminal IT products and WiMAX indicates that industry trends are moving into a new era

of integration of IT and communications. As a result, mobile phone manufacturers will be

researching and developing mobile phones with embedded WiMAX chipsets.

WiMAX Applications Services and WiMAX Open Solutions will be displayed in the M-Taiwan

Pavilion. Visitors can experience a WiMAX Live Demo in person, which includes M-Home, M-

Shopping MRT Mobile Life, M-Outdoor Living, which closes the digital gap and M-TV Station Mobile

Television. The WiMAX Open Solution Area will demonstrate all the equipment and components

within a WiMAX Ecosystem.

The WiMAX System Products Area will demonstrate Mobile WiMAX terminals, BS and ASN

Gateways. Motorola, one of the leading mobile WiMAX solution providers, will demonstrate "WiMAX

is Now & Here" by showcasing the WiMAX ecosystem of network and devices, backhaul and

applications for delivering true "personal broadband" experience. Alcatel-Lucent will offer the

demonstrations of WiMAX technologies, Open CPE Program and WiMAX Application Services.

In the WiMAX Components Area, Intel, Sequans, and Taiwan companies MediaTek Inc. and

Mobile Devices Inc. are making positive progress in the development of WiMAX chipsets. It is

expected that this year Tawian companies will introduce WiMAX chipset products.

In July 2007, the ROC's National Communications Commission issued 6 WiMAX operating

licenses in northern, central and southern Taiwan. 5 of the 6 recipients of these licenses will be

exhibiting at the WiMAX Applications Area, namely, First International Telecom Corp., Tatung Co.,

Global Mobile Corp., Far EasTone Telecommunications, and VASTAR CABLE TV SYSTEM CORP.

All these companies will deliver WiMAX services to the residents of the island.

The exhibition will showcase two kinds of WiMAX Buses, the WiMAX Demo Bus designed by the

organizer and the WiMAX VIP Bus designed by FITEL and FET. The WiMAX VIP Bus will

demonstrate a range of application services that will be available via WiMAX mobile broadband

access in the near future. The WiMAX VIP Bus by FET and FITEL will focus on M-Taiwan project

achievements. Visitors can experience a Digital Signage System, live wireless broadband Internet

access, commercial vehicle operation system and real time mobile video conferencing.
