'Be bold', urges Australian Institute of

Architects on 30 Year Plan

The Australian Institute of Architects has welcomed news that

the Draft 30 Year plan for Greater Adelaide is proceeding to

finalisation with amendments arising from community feedback.

Consultation with industry stakeholders, design professionals and the wider

community are three key elements in the creation of an integrated master planning

solution and so the incorporation of community feedback is a valuable next step.

While the specifics of the amended plan have not yet been circulated, the primary

changes appear to protect the rural character of the Barossa and Willunga Basin

while pursuing additional transit-oriented developments (TOD) and increasing

residential density in the City of Adelaide.

Vice President of the Institute’s South Australian Chapter, Mario Dreosti, who co-

authored the Institutes' response to the Draft 30 Year Plan today said: "The

Institute urges government to focus on the increased density and amenity of the

City of Adelaide as a primary objective in the realisation of this plan. While

multiple ownerships, heritage and existing community influences all serve to make

the regeneration of Adelaide City by far the most challenging TOD, it is also best

placed for success and best able to redefine our wider community views on

lifestyles with increased density and services."

Mr Dreosti queried the viability of the number of TOD’s proposed, noting that

Adelaide's population and land values may not support quality design in TOD

centres away from the Adelaide CBD.

"For TODs to be considered an attractive lifestyle choice for South Australians, the

quality of the public realm, building and landscape design is a critical investment.

Business-as-usual models won't cut it, and strong leadership may be required from

govt to avoid more of the same being re-packaged under a new brand".

The SA Chapter of the Institute continues to support the work of current Thinker in

Residence, Fred Hansen. Fred Hansen’s experience in Oregon is relevant to the

Adelaide context and will be an asset as work on the 30 Year Plan progresses.
